Testimonies: The vanishing (and reappearing) Bible

This, I will admit, is an unusual testimony for me. I have heard people over the years tell how they thought God was leading them to do things, with an almost audible voice, and I always thought that seemed kind of weird, and outside the way God really works today. However, on one occasion years ago when Toby was still a baby, God adjusted the way I saw things.

One evening when I was getting things ready to go to the drive-in movie theatre with my family, I felt the strong urging to bring along my small pocket Bible. It was not an audible voice that I heard, but an unmistakable feeling that I was going to need my Bible sometime that night. I wondered if I would meet someone that night that God wanted me to share with. Somewhat puzzled by this feeling, I added my Bible to the stack of things that I was carrying to the car.

As it ends up, I had no occasion to use my Bible at the drive-in. Once, when I was going to the snack bar, I had to turn around and go back to my car to put my Bible in my pocket, just in case. I felt so sure that I was going to need it sometime that night. I kept it with me the whole evening, but never used it.

When we got home at about 1:30 am, I still had not used the Bible. I remember unloading the car and standing there looking at the Bible and feeling surprised that I had not used it that night. I really had felt confident that God was telling me to bring it, and couldn't understand why I had apparently brought it for nothing.

I got up around 5:00am the following morning and began looking for my Bible. I couldn't find it anywhere. It was not in the car, in the house, or anywhere between. In the end, I decided that the only logical conclusion was that I dropped it in the driveway between the house and the car, and someone or something picked it up between 1:30 am and 5:00 am before I began looking for it. The likelihood seemed infinitesimal, but it was the only thing that made sense. I supposed that God had used my Bible after all, in some way that I would never know.

God confirmed this to me when, three days later, I got a phone call from someone telling me that he had found my Bible in the road about three blocks away (my phone number was on the inside cover). Where had my Bible been for those three days? Had God used it to touch someone? This Bible had an enormous amount of highlights and notes in it and even a plan of salvation handwritten inside the back cover. If for no other reason that the sheer mathematical odds of this happening by chance, I believe that God did use this Bible for some purpose, and I look forward to getting to heaven and finding out the other half to this story.
